Which one is correct: kindergarten or Kindergarden?
Even if the difference between the words kindergarten and kindergarden is almost imperceptible, only one of those two is accurate. It is important to know both the rules of writing and the rules of pronunciation so that we can use them correctly, without a doubt.
The correct variant is kindergarten
From a grammatical point of view, the right form and the one that is always used both in speech and in writing is kindergarten, originated from the German language. The kindergarten is the educational institution attended by preschoolers, in which they thrive through activities such as: introduction to sports, drawing or social interaction, different educational games, and other fun occupations. This prepares the little ones for the next phase – the school stage.
The origin of the kindergarten word
Friedrich Fröbel is the person who laid the foundations of modern education by arguing that all children have individual needs and must be treated uniquely. Thus, Fröbel created and developed the concept of kindergarten, also inventing the word kindergarten (from German Kinder Garten, meaning Children’s Garden).
It is no coincidence that Fröbel chose the word garten. The German educator believes that interaction in nature plays an important role in kids’s development, and exploring the environment helps the little ones understand the world better.
